Stargardt disease is an inherited retinal degeneration associated with mutations in the ABCA4 gene. The disease progression causes degeneration of photoreceptors in the retina. We will take high-resolution images of the retinas of participants with known mutations in the ABCA4 gene to improve our understanding of how photoreceptors are affected by these mutations and we will take images of retinas of healthy volunteers for comparison purposes. By characterizing the micro-patterns of structural and functional degeneration, we expect to help further understand the disease mechanism and potential routes for treatment. As part of this study we will develop the equipment further to enable us to make this high-resolution imaging more feasible for larger participant numbers.
